Sailing at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club - Thailand

Winds

There are three general seasons for sailing at Varuna. The first is the “Northerly Monsoon” season which runs approximately from early November through to late February. Winds are from the North and can be as strong as 20 to 25Knts.

The second is the “Southwesterly” season which runs from February through to late May. There is some overlap in the timing of when the Northerlies finish and the Southwesterlies start. The southwesterlies blow at 10 -12 knots and provide excellent sailing conditions at Varuna.  Cat week is scheduled for early Feb 2012 so the prevailing breeze may be either the northerly or the southwesterly.

Safety

Bouyancy Aids must be worn at all times whilst sailing and must be provided by visitors. It is necessary to bring harnesses if trapezing. Sailors coming for Laser race training may wish to bring their own sails and XD running rigging.

Staff & Assistance

There will be staff on duty throughout  the regatta to help with launching and retreiving boats off the beach. They also provide general safety cover although members & visitors sail at their own risk.  Members and temporary members should arrange for their own personal and third party insurance when using the Club facilities.
